Make the Back-to-School Transition Easier

Oh my... It’s already HERE! How did it creep up so fast?

Let’s face it. Transitioning from a less-structured summer break of fun activities into back-to-school “prep mode” can be daunting. This is especially true for brave, conscientious homeschool parents like you – moms and dads blessed with the opportunity to teach their kids at home.

Preparing your kids to go to school is easy; preparing your home to be the school can be overwhelming.

For busy homeschool families, back-to-school responsibilities don’t end with ushering kids safely onto a yellow bus. Preparing them to go to school is easy; preparing your home to be the school can be overwhelming.

Ok, so you’re totally committed, but temporarily challenged. If there was only an extended amount of uninterrupted time for focused concentration. If you only had a few consecutive days where the house was totally tranquil and there was nothing else on your plate. Preparation for the upcoming semester with no distractions in a peaceful environment would be a piece of cake!

But in reality, you’re in this awkward, catch-22 season where you desperately need time to concentrate and get organized. And you can’t ignore those restless kids that wake up needing attention, affection, encouragement, discipline, structure, direction, nutrition, guidance, education, training, faith-building, role-modeling, purpose and vision. Feeling overwhelmed yet?

Time for some strategic planning.

Here’s the crux of the challenge. Your children instinctively know that you’re about to lead them into a more structured regimen. But after a summer of fun-in-the-sun and outdoor activities, they’re probably not quite ready for this abrupt change. And without a ton of tireless work on your part, they aren’t likely lining up single-file in the living room every morning – fed, showered, dressed, and eager to start memorizing multiplication tables and participating in morning devotionals.

So back to reality. Are there creative ways to ease them back into the school year?

When you boil it down, you and your kids have one thing in common – you both need to prepare for another year of education. You need to prepare to educate – they need to be prepared to be educated. What you both need is a tactical bridge from an entertainment-focused summer to a fall semester centered on education.
