The Lesser Light: A Family Devotional

Created During Creation Week

When did the Creator make the moon?

  • Read Genesis, Chapter 1.

Questions

  • What day of creation week did God make the moon?
  • What else did He make that day?
  • Why do you think He chose this day to make the moon?

Signs and Seasons

The Bible tells us that God made the moon for signs and seasons:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:14-18)
The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. (Psalm 104:18-20)
The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:8-9)
Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: (Jeremiah 31:35)

Questions

  • According to the above verses, why did God create the moon?
  • How does the moon separate the day from night?
  • What use is the moon’s light to Earth?
  • How does the moon give us signs of seasons, days and years?
  • How is the moon a sign of His mercy?
  • What does Jeremiah 31:35 mean when it says that the moon divideth the sea when the wave thereof roar? We now understand that the gravitational pull on our oceans help to cause the tides. With out this movement, plankton and other life would become stagnate and die. These animals provide the foundation of the food chain. If they died, life would no longer be the same here on Earth!
  • What other important roles does the moon play?
The moon’s gravitational pull helps to keep the Earth’s tilt stable at an average of 23.5 degrees on its axis. Without this stability, our seasons would go out of control. Also, the moon blocks debris that would otherwise collide with the Earth.
  • How does the moon show God’s provision for mankind?

The Glory of God

The Bible says that the moon shows God’s glory:

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:3-4)
The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. (Psalm 121:5-7)
Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. (Psalm 148:2-4)
There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. (Corinthians 15:40-41)

Questions

  • How does the moon show the Creator’s glory?
  • Like in Psalm 8:3-4, why would the moon cause someone to wonder why God cares about mankind?
  • What does Psalm 148:2-4 mean?
  • What does 1 Corinthians 15:40-41 mean?
  • When you look at the moon, how does it make you feel in comparison to the Creator?

Prayer

End you family devotion by praying as a family. Thank the Creator for His provision and glory that we see revealed in His creation of the moon!
