Water Erosion
What is Erosion? It is the shaping of rocks, mud, soil, etc, by natural forces. Water can be a powerful force of erosion. Below are different types of water erosion:
Types:
Splash Erosion — This type of erosion is caused by splashing water. A good example of this type is when it rains. While each drop by itself is not very powerful, together hundreds of raindrops can really move a lot of material. Sheet Erosion — This happens when water picks up material in a thin sheet-like manner and cuts an even, wide area. A great example is when the water cuts away a sheet of top-soil. Gully Erosion — This type of erosion leaves behind an actual trench. Some gullies are very short — some can stretch for miles and miles depending upon the force and amount of water. Rill Erosion — This erosion leaves behind small channels as water meanders and cuts as it flows over a slope. Within rill erosion, we often find smaller “fingers” of channels that are called inter-rill erosion.
